Weirdgrass

Punch Brothers - "Punch" (2008)

Everyone's heard Nickel Creek's sentimental cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya." No one's ever heard their semi-off kilter bluegrass band, Punch Brothers. Concept alternative-bluegrass album concerning a divorce (The Blind Leaving the Blind in 4 Movements), with elements of the Schoenbergian school of 12-tone serialism. Not your standard Americana release. Recommended.

PS) I looked everywhere for this. I'd appreciate some appreciation :P.

Edit: "The Blind Leaving The Blind" is considered a "classical bluegrass" composition, written for a quintet, debuted in Carnegie Hall. Serious business.

Been caught binging

Breakwater - "EP" (1995)

I've been binging on old screamo and emo. This stuff is pretty awesome, albeit forgotten.

Nostalgia, you say?

Polaris - "Music from The Adventures of Pete & Pete" (1999)

I miss old Nickelodeon. This was my favorite show back in the day.

Fuck the Futur

Rainbow of Death - "Rainbow of Death" 10" (2007)

Most of you know of the drone/doom monolith "Monarch!", however, you've probably never heard their one-off powerviolence project, Rainbow of Death. If the fact that it's drone/doom guys doing some of the most ripping powerviolence I've ever heard doesn't get you, just look at their vocalist, Emilie. She's adorable.

Compilation - "Take Me Home - A Tribute to John Denver" (2000)

Low, Red House Painters, Mark Kozelek collaborating with Rachel Goswell of Slowdive fame? Count me in. I grew up listening to John Denver's music, and though this compilation significantly lacks in "Rocky Mountain High," it makes up with its high levels of sheer awesome.

Ekkaia - "Sombras del Progreso" (2006)

What's that? You don't like crust? Guess again.

Leech doesn't approve of your bootleg Fauna t-shirt.

Forgotten

Bosse - Echoes of the Forgotten (2008)

This is one of those bands that people just suddenly forgot, and it's a real shame. In 2008 we saw the release of the "III" EP, "What Night Brings..." (a split with DSBM band Trancelike Void), and this full length. Soon after, Bosse dropped off of the map...HOWEVER, this NY depressor appears to have released a new EP this year. I need to find it.

Bosse is a minimalist, extremely sad "folk" project, containing elements of drone and post-rock. Lost, but now found.

Such a strnge msspelling

Carissa's Wierd - You Should Be At Home Here (2001)

IT'S SO SAD. It's even more sad that they split up and formed Band of Horses. Rec'd by Cam, cause he wanted some non-Low slowcore, and I must deliver.

:(

GARRY FUCKIN' BRENTS

They Mostly Come Out At Night - Built Upon This Earth (2009)

Garry Brents played (author's note: MAKE MORE) bass for this band. Also he's better than you in more ways than one. You can hear his new stuff here.

Quit your day job, guys.

Nyarlathotep - Slub Lorth in Eternal Rest (2001)

Too kvlt for a demo cover, I guess.

You wouldn't guess it, but this band that sounds eerily like Evoken "boasts" Gunface MacKenzie and Gregory Weeks from The Red Chord and Beyond the Sixth Seal, two god awful -core bands.

Get CRUSHED

France

The Skaden - You Will Hope I Had Died (2009)

Stefan Kozak of Eikenskaden and Mystic Forest still makes music, apparently. Thank god.

Dear France,

You're really good at black metal.

Love,
Jon

Unlucky Atlas - The Ruin of All Space (2006)

Here's a picture of Locrian.

I can't even begin to tell you how long it took me to find this. Chicago mainstays T. Hannum and A. Foisy of Locrian making awesome folk with their wives.

Silly Nazis

Eisenwinter - Verkommen, Entartet Und Verreckt (2007)

Goofy, drunk, melodic black metal that has more in common with Bad Religion than one might think. Aside from the whole Naziism thing, that is. Expect a new album this year, at least from what I've heard.

And yes, that is an ice skating gestapo. I hope this guy isn't serious.

Pretty things

Musk Ox - Musk Ox (2009)

It's like Kveldssanger part two, but not. Naturey neofolk from Canada, and I'm seeing em with Vindensang and Sequences in August. Woo.
